St. Brigid's Church

310 St Patrick St, Ottawa, ON K1N 5K5, Canada

Description:

In Ottawa, at the corner of St. Patrick's and Cumberland Streets, is the Catholic Church of St. Brigid. It was built in 1889 for one of Ottawa’s first English-speaking Catholic communities. At that time there was only the French-speaking church of Notre Dame, which was impossible to attend due to ignorance of the language. The Irish, who represented the English community, proposed the creation of the Church of St. Brigid.

The author of the architectural project was James Bowes. The church lasted until 2007. Due to the huge funds required for the restoration and maintenance of the building, it was decided to sell the building. Today it houses the Irish-Canadian Cultural Heritage Centre, which hosts dozens of cultural events, exhibitions and concerts every year.
