Bank Street Bridge
Description:
The Bank Street Bridge connects the Glebe and Old Ottawa neighborhoods, separated by the Rideau Canal. The first bridge, built in 1866, was wooden and movable to allow boats and barges to pass through the canal. In 1912, it was demolished and the modern, taller Bank Street Canal Bridge was built in its place. The bridge is supported by six vaulted supports, which in turn are based on large berths.
Every winter the canal freezes, forming under the bridge and for several kilometers in both directions the world's largest natural skating rink. The bridge at this location provides additional protection from impact and cracks on the outer surface of the ice.
