McDonald Bridge - Cartier Ottawa
Pont Macdonald Cartier, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Description:
The MacDonald-Cartier Bridge got its name not from the famous restaurant chain or French watch brand, as one might think at first glance. In fact, it is named after two prime ministers of the provinces of Canada - John MacDonald and Georges-Etienne Cartier. The bridge is a symbol of the unification of the Anglo- and French-speaking parts of the country. The six-lane road bridge has two wide pedestrian sidewalks with separate paths for cyclists.
On the east side, the bridge crosses into the main highway. In this place, the pedestrian sidewalk and bike paths are turned into the nearest park and into neighboring streets. Construction of the bridge began in 1963. The project was a continuous construction of steel beams.
