Plaza Bridge
Description:
The Plaza Bridge is at the intersection of the Rideau Canal and the Ottawa River, connecting Wellington Street to Rideau Street. It consists of three high spans and provides car and pedestrian traffic. On the east side of the bridge is the beautiful building of the Grand Hotel Château Lorier, and on the west side is Parliament Hill. Until 1930, there were two separate bridges for different traffic, but they were combined and became an extension of Queen Street.
The Plaza Bridge is a complex construction. The first span of the bridge passes over the highway, which runs along the west bank of the canal. The central span is directly above the water. The eastern span is over a former railway tunnel along the east bank of the canal. The two original bridges were combined to fill the space separating them, so the Plaza Bridge narrows from west to east.
