Stornoway Ottawa Mansion

541 Acacia Avenue, Ottawa, ON K1M 0M5, Canada

Description:

Stornoway is a luxurious mansion located in the most fashionable and expensive area of Ottawa - in Rockliff Parks and is one of the main attractions of the city. For its maintenance, as the residence of the leader of one of the Canadian parties, about 70,000 Canadian dollars are allocated annually from the state budget.

Architect Alan Kiefer began construction of the mansion in 1914. It originally belonged to Asconio Major, a large owner of vegetable stores. Stornoway Mansion consists of 34 rooms, including eight bedrooms and five bathrooms.

During its nearly hundred-year history, Stornoway has hosted many eminent guests and even royalty. For some time, during the 2nd World War, the future Queen of the Netherlands Juliana lived here, who was in exile at that time. With her lived her daughter Beatrix, also the future Queen.

The current occupant of the mansion, Lucien Bouchard, became the first opposition leader to turn his attention to Stornoway as his residence. But neither he nor his followers lived in the mansion until 1997, considering it too luxurious. But despite a waste of taxpayer money, Canadian opposition leaders have settled in Stornoway.
