Temple of the Resurrection of Christ

213 Winona Drive, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Description:

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ in the Canadian city of Toronto, Ontario, is also known as the “Russian Church”. This nickname was assigned to the temple because it was built by Russian immigrants from modern Belarus and Ukraine. In 1915, New York City architect John Bergesen was invited to build the temple. He designed a traditional Orthodox church with six domes and an internal division into three parts - the hallway, the nave and the sanctuary.

The main treasures of the Temple of the Resurrection of Christ are its icons. These were the last images left Russia before the overthrow of Tsar Nicholas II. So, today in Toronto there is a miraculous Kursk-Root Icon, dating from the beginning of the XIII century. The icon was found in Russia by one of the local residents of the village of Rylsk near the devastated Kursk. The icon lay face down in the roots of the tree, and as soon as it was lifted, a clean and watery spring hammered near the tree.
