Masonic Temple

2-20 Davenport Rd, Toronto, ON M4W 2H2, Canada

Description:

The Masonic Temple building is known to Toronto residents and visitors as the CTV Temple or MTV Temple. This is a small four-storey mansion of the early twentieth century, located near the city center at the intersection of Davenport Road and Young Street.

The first years of the building’s life are strongly associated with the Masonic Lodge. The construction of the temple began in late 1917, when a Masonic ceremony was held to lay the cornerstone. In those days, the first meeting of the Masonic lodge took place on the eve of the celebration of the new year. During its heyday, the Masonic Temple opened its doors to 38 different Masonic organizations, including 27 symbolic lodges and 2 Knights Templar Priories.

In the second half of the twentieth century, a new history of the building of the Masonic temple began. The building was sold, and the new owner equipped a concert hall here, which became famous as a concert and dance venue. Here were the first performances of many performers and collectives, which later became popular. It also recorded performances of international stars and hosted rehearsals and concerts of legendary bands such as Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. Since March 2006, the office of the MTV channel has been located in the building of the Masonic temple.
