Holy Sunday Russian Orthodox Cathedral
75 East 43 Ave, Vancouver, BC, V5W 1S7, Canada
Description:
The first Church of the Resurrection in Vancouver was built on November 25, 1928, but it did not last long. When construction began on the 43rd East Avenue bridge, the church was torn down. At the same time, the Russian Orthodox community in Vancouver began raising money to build a new church. The fundraising was completed on 11 July 1954.
The Church of the Resurrection of Christ is built in the traditional Russian style, crowned with three domes. The middle and largest of them have windows. The main church hall is quite spacious and can accommodate about 450 people. In the lower halls there is a kitchen and dining room, a church library and several other rooms for the possibility of holding meetings of the Council. The icons for the church were painted by Mother Henrietta Somov with the blessing of His Eminence, His Grace Seraphim, Bishop of Ottawa and Canada. A huge contribution to the construction was made by Archpriest Peter Kurzemnik and His Eminence Metropolitan Leonty, who helped in the improvement of the new Resurrection Church and its halls.
