The ancient city of Lamu

Lamu, Kenya

Description:

Lamu is an ancient, well-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, located on the island of the same name in Kenya. A distinctive feature of the city is the simplicity and at the same time the functionality of the buildings, which are enriched with such elements as luxurious verandas, spacious courtyards and wooden doors, skillfully decorated with carvings.

Most of the Lamu structures were built from fossilized corals and limestone more than 600 years ago. Since the XIX century, the city has become a center for the study of Swahili cultures and Islam. It is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walking through the streets of the ancient city of Lamu, you can see the numerous wells that provided the locals with water. The main mosque and the former security fortification are also well preserved. The main embankment of Lamu is built up with beautiful Swahili houses, the view of which you can best enjoy from a sailing boat or boat.
