Fort Jesus

Kenya, Mombasa, Old Town.

Description:

Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most famous landmark. It was built in 1593 by the Portuguese and served as a protective barrier against the Turks and militant African tribes. The author of the project of the fortress was the Italian architect Joao Batista Cairato. The well-chosen place for the construction of the fort then became one of the best harbors on the entire east coast of the continent. However, the same factor caused many battles between the Portuguese and the Arabs, who tried to take possession of the fort.

The fortress is built in such a way that, looking from a bird's eye view, it resembles a person: there is a head, arms and legs. For the sixteenth century, such an architectural work was considered a masterpiece.

It now houses a museum displaying ancient Portuguese and Arab artifacts, including jewelry and ceramics.

The fort is open to visitors and operates daily from 8:30 to 18:00. The cost of the bidet for tourists will be 800 Kenyan shillings.
