The airport acquired international status in 1979. From July to September 1994, Moi International Airport station was continuously used as a residence for refugees affected by the Rwandan genocide.
The airport currently serves about 25 airlines, the most popular of which are Edelweiss Air, Blue Panorama Airlines and African Express Airways. The main destinations are Moroni, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta, Dubai, Kigali, Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam. The infrastructure of Moi International Airport is developed at the highest level - there are comfortable waiting rooms, restaurants and rest rooms.
