Archaeological Monument of Koobi Fora
Description:
Koobi Fora is a vast area in northern Kenya, a multi-layered archaeological site. Here were found the remains of more than 160 individuals of the oldest hominids. The most famous find is the “Skull 1470”, which was found in 1972 by paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey and is perfectly preserved to our time. It indicates the existence of apes with a sufficiently large brain in East Africa.
Also here were found the remains of the “Rectus Man”, which is characterized by more complex Olduvai guns. The age of the artifact is about 1.6 million years. Also on the territory of Koobi Fora unique tools of Acheulean culture were discovered. All excavations are currently part of the exposition of the Koobi Fora National Museum.
New findings at Koobi Fora by Luis and Meeve Leakey prove that 1.95-1.78 million years ago there was another species of Homo, different from Homo habilis and Homo rudolfensis.
Every year this place is visited by many tourists, as well as experienced and novice archaeologists.
