Central island
Central Island National Park, Kenya
Description:
The central island, also known as Crocodile Island, is located on Kenya’s Lake Turkana. It is a volcano whose slopes consist of tuff, pumice, basalt, ash, water and phonolith. The structure of the Central Island is represented by dozens of cones and craters, some of which formed beautiful lakes.
The highest point of Crocodile Island reaches about 170 meters above sea level. The lowest part of the island is the southeastern coast. Many of the craters are half or completely submerged. Numerous lavas and tuffs found on almost the entire surface of the Central Island date back to the Holocene period.
Central Island National Park is unique and exotic. It is a refuge for animal species such as the crocodile, zebra, reticulated giraffe, Grant's gazelle, oryx, topi, large kudu and hippo. Of the predators here live the cheetah, lion, leopard, as well as the jackal and striped hyena. From birds there are ducks, flamingos and pelicans.
