Lake Turkan National Parks
Description:
Lake Turkana, also known as Rudolf, is the saltiest of all major African lakes. On the shore of the lake there are three national parks, which are the place of stops of many migratory birds, as well as the “birthing home” for Nile crocodiles, hippos and various poisonous snakes. Also here is the world-famous area called Koobi Fora, where numerous remains of hominids, mammals and mollusks of great importance for paleogeography were found.
Lake Turkana National Parks include Sibiloy Park, located on the northeastern shore, as well as the South and Central Islands Parks. The total area of the protected area is about 7 million hectares. Sybiloy National Park is home to zebras, Grant's gazelles, reticulated giraffes, oryxes, topi and hippos.
The South Island National Park is home to many predators such as the lion, cheetah, leopard, as well as the striped hyena and the jackal. Central Island National Park is often referred to as Crocodile Island Park or Volcanic Island Park, with birds including pelicans, ducks and flamingos.
