Spring and Labor Festival

Description:

Everyone walks...
The celebration of Spring and Labor in Cyprus can be divided into two parts: serious and fun.

Serious is the fact that demonstrations and rallies of workers, trade unions, etc. take place on the streets in different cities of Cyprus. For fun, everything that can be attributed to fun. Concerts are held in squares, theaters and concert halls. On May 1, every year, a superstar arrives on the island, whose concert becomes the center of attention of residents and guests of the entire island.

In addition, on the streets everything speaks about the holiday: the congestion of people, noise, songs heard in different directions, the sounds of different musical instruments, the ringing of glasses.

On this day, it is customary to weave wreaths of wild herbs, garlic and wild flowers in order to ward off evil spirits that can interfere with fun.

The serious side of this holiday should also be attributed to the fact that this is the day of the country’s entry into the European Union. This happened in 2005, when Cyprus became an official member of the EU, which was one of the most important events in the modern history of Cyprus. On January 1, 2008, the country officially switched to the euro. Cyprus used its currency, the Cyprus Pound.
