Good Friday

Description:

Symbolic burning of the stuffed Judas
Good Friday, the day of the strictest fast before Easter, is a holiday in Cyprus. The government allows people, especially believers, to prepare for the celebration.

For lean lunch, lentil soup with vinegar is necessarily served. This is a symbolic dish that reminds everyone that the Crucified Christ was offered a sponge dipped in a bite instead of water, when He asked the guard to give something to quench his incredible thirst. This thirst was all the more intensified by the lack of oxygen provoked by the suffocation experienced by the Savior while receiving the torment of the cross.

On Friday, all members of the family try to spend in special prayers and in strict abstinence.

On this day there is no room for loud laughter, many words, but also on this day there is no despondency. Christ will soon be resurrected, which means that everyone is in the quiet joy of waiting for the Great Resurrection.

On Saturday, many Cypriot children take to the streets to participate in a costume performance. In the churchyard children bring pre-assembled firewood.

In the evening, a fire will be lit here, which will symbolize the burning of the stuffed Judas who betrayed Christ.
