Church of Angeloctys
Description:
The Church of Panagia Angeloktisti is considered one of the oldest in Cyprus. Its origin is connected with the legend. The Virgin Mary wanted a temple in this place. But there was no one around to build it. And then a miracle happened: angels appeared and in one night they built a temple. It is also known as “built by angels”. According to the mosaic preserved to our time, the age of the temple was determined.
The construction dates from the 6-7th century AD. The dome temple and chapel were completed in the 11th century. We have also reached the image of the Virgin with a baby, and next to it are the archangels Michael and Gabriel (Early Byzantine work). In a difficult period of history, mosaics were covered with a thick layer of plaster, which saved them from destruction. Also preserved is the only fresco depicting John the Baptist.
On the territory of the church there is a small garden in which the attention of visitors will be attracted by a huge tree protected by the state due to its considerable age. You can get to the church by car from Larnaca in a western direction to the village of Kiti.
