Monastery of St. George in Trulli Mavrovruni

Trully, Larnaca

Description:

The Monastery of St. George is located in the village of Trulli in the suburbs of Larnaca. This is a working men's monastery.

Another name of the temple of Mavrovrun is associated with the Greek language. Translated, it means “black land”. The first mention of the temple dates back to the thirteenth century. Presumably, at that time it was a convent, since even the hill next to it was called “Nun Hill”.

Unfortunately, data on how he looked at the foundation period, not preserved. The new temple was rebuilt in the eighteenth century. A hundred years later, the monastery was empty, only the chapel for services remained open. Life here is quite active now. Pilgrims come every year. In the temple there is no usual brilliance and wealth. In the underground part you can visit the underground church. In the center is the canonical image of St. George. One part of the monastery is open to visitors, exhibitions and master classes are held here. The second part is closed, monks live there and the monastery library is located.

You can get there by car from Larnaca on the A3 highway. First go east to the village of Oroklini, and then towards the village of Trulli, about 3 kilometers later there is a sign to the monastery.
