Salt Lake Aliki

South of Larnaca, Cyprus

Description:

This salt lake is located southwest of the city of Larnaca in Cyprus, near the international airport. The lake is unique because it disappears during the hot summer months and cannot be seen. The view of tourists opens salt layer thickness of about 10 centimeters. The area of the lake is 5 km2.

According to legend, this lake was formed on the site of vineyards. One of the local residents did not want to give grapes to St. Lazarus, for which he decided to punish her by drying and turning a fertile place into salt. For a long time, salt was mined and exported. From a scientific point of view, the appearance of salt is explained by the fact that due to rains, salt that is underground comes to the surface. During the rainy season, many birds flock to the lake. Pink flamingos look especially graceful. Along the lake there are benches, on them you can sit and enjoy the beauty of nature. Aliki has been protected by the state since 1997.

You can reach the lake on foot from Eldyk Park and the Cameres Aqueduct. You can also take city buses to Cameres or the airport.
