Trodos is one of the most attractive places in Cyprus. Ancient temples, cozy Byzantine villages, family wineries, the best Cypriot taverns, unique nature reserves - all this you will find here! Maybe you are one of those travelers who have already visited almost all of Cyprus, or maybe you will see Cyprus for the first time. But the landscapes that will open from the car window will not leave anyone indifferent.
The monastery of Maheras, founded in the XII century, attracts attention thanks to the miraculous icon of the Most Holy Mother of God. This icon, where “The Virgin is one, without the Child, as if praying, with outstretched hands,” was written by the Apostle Luke.
After visiting the monastery, you will stop for a while in the beautiful village of Lefkara. It is known for its craftsmen: the lace works of the inhabitants of Lefkara are protected by UNESCO, and the masters of silver affairs of this village create exact copies of jewelry rented from the museums of Cyprus. In 1341, the construction of the Church of the Holy Cross (Timiu Stavrou) began in the village of Lefkara.
According to documentary evidence, the money for the construction of the temple was donated by the wife of King Hugh IV Alice. Shortly before, she had been punished mutely for indecent behavior in the monastery of Maheras and miraculously healed by attaching herself to the Holy Cross.
Stavrovouni Monastery is one of the three main monasteries of Cyprus. In the fourth century St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, on the way from Jerusalem to Constantinople stopped in Cyprus. She carried with her holy relics, including the fragment of the cross on which Christ was crucified. It is believed that St. Helena founded a monastery on the mountain and gave him a gift of the fragments of the cross. Hence the name - Stavrovouni, which means "mountain of the cross".
