Cyprus is sometimes called the “island of saints” because it is consecrated by the exploits of many saints. Christianity in Cyprus was preached by the Holy Apostles Paul, Barnabas and Mark. But even before the arrival of the apostles in Cyprus there were some Christians. According to the Book of Acts of the Apostles, the holy apostles Paul and Barnabas passed through all of Cyprus from Salamis to P. The Bishop of Cyprus was Saint Lazarus the Four Days, resurrected by the Lord Jesus Christ.
One of the main places in Trodos is the monastery of Kikkos. It is located at an altitude of 1318 m. The monastery is a place of pilgrims, since there is a miraculous icon of the Virgin, according to legend, one of the three written by the Apostle Luke during the life of the Virgin Mary herself. During its history, the monastery burned 4 times, but each time the miraculous icon was saved. The whole monastery of Kikkos is fabulously beautiful: magnificent architecture, rich frescoes, mosaic paintings on the walls of the monastery itself, the refectory, numerous transitions that capture not only the life of the monastery, but also the history of Christianity, scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
In the vicinity of Paphos is the monastery of the Monk Neophyte (about 10 km north-west of the city). In the 12th and 13th centuries this reverend father asceticized here. In the cave on the rock is his cell and cave temple.Pilgrims can visit the cave cell and the temple, and in the nearby monastery to attach to the relics of St. Neophyte. The monastery also has a museum consisting of two departments, one of which contains ancient icons, vestments, church utensils. The other branch is not the church, which presents archaeological finds 900-600 BC.
Three kilometers southeast of Paphos is the village of Geroskipu (“sacred garden”). Here you should definitely visit (besides other attractions) the ancient Church of the Holy Martyr Paraskeva. The temple is dedicated to St. Paraskeva of Rome, a martyr of the second century. Paraskeva wanted to devote her life to God and the enlightenment of the pagans. It is known that she healed Emperor Antoninus Pius from blindness. For the confession of the Orthodox faith, the pagans seized, tortured in every possible way and cut off the head. Folk rumor ascribes to Saint Paraskeva many miracles, especially those associated with the healing of eye diseases. The Byzantine five-domed church of St. Paraskeva is one of the oldest in Cyprus. The temple was built in the IX century and belongs to the type of cross-domed temples, in the central part of which there are four pillars supporting the dome. In addition to the unusual architecture, the church is famous for its frescoes, which depict scenes from Holy Scripture. Frescoes have been painted on top of each other for centuries, and today restorers discover earlier works. These are just a few of the shrines that can be seen in Cyprus. Of course, this cannot be done in one tour. I look forward to discovering more and more holy places in Cyprus.
