Monastery of St. Nicholas ("Cat Monastery")

Limassol

Description:

St. Nicholas Monastery is one of the oldest in Cyprus. Presumably, the date of its foundation is called 327 years. It is named after St. Nicholas, who patronized sailors and fishermen. These crafts were the main ones for the inhabitants of the island. According to legend, it was founded by the mother of Emperor Constantine. They left a piece of wood of the Holy Cross, so the place was recognized as a saint. It also has another name: Cat. Due to the drought on the island of Akrotiri, a large number of snakes bred, and cats brought here helped to exterminate them. In the sixteenth century, the building was empty. Only in 1980 it was inhabited by Orthodox monks and restored. Now it is a convent, on its territory and today you can meet representatives of cats. It will not be possible to enter the internal territory. A small part of the courtyard will open from the inner gallery, which has access.

The temple is located 12 kilometers from the historical center of Limassol. You can get there by car along the sea. Or take the 19A public bus to Akrotiri.
