St. Thekla Monastery

Limassol

Description:

The monastery of St. Thekla is one of the most famous in Cyprus and belongs to the early period of the development of Christianity. Thekla, a disciple of the Apostle Paul, was a famous healer who helped people. She was one of the first Cypriot nuns. When she heard Paul’s sermon, the young girl renounced worldly life and devoted herself to the service of God. Legend has it that her local authorities sentenced her to be burned at the stake for her beliefs. Without fear of death, she was executed. But an unexpected downpour put out the fire, and the girl survived. Surprised by what happened, the priests expelled her from the city.

The monastery is located in the village of Mosfiloti, near the central highway. On the territory of the monastery are the remains of St. Thekla, by pure chance preserved to our time. Also, pilgrims are attracted by the holy spring, the healing clay of which helps in the treatment of skin diseases. Photos of healed children can be seen at the entrance to the church. Saint Thekla Day is celebrated on September 24.

You can get to the shrine by car from Larnaca and Limassol.
