Paphos is an ancient city of Cyprus. It was founded in the XII century BC and was originally located 15 km southeast of modern Paphos in the place where the village of Kuklia is now located. According to one version, the founder of the city is the hero of the Trojan War - Agapenor, on the other - Kinir, who was the king of ancient Cyprus. In the fourth century BC, the ruler of Paphos Nicocles moved the city to its present location, suitable for the construction of a seaport. Thus appeared Paphos harbor, in which ships moored from all over the Mediterranean Sea. Since that time, the period of development and prosperity of Paphos began. The city received the status of the administrative center of Cyprus. In 58 BC. Cyprus became one of the provinces of the Roman Empire and the seat of Roman proconsuls. The most famous of which is Marcus Tullius Cicero lived and worked in Paphos in 51 BC.
In the Archaeological Park of Paphos you can find surviving fragments of buildings of different eras: from the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages. The pearl of the park’s collection is the floor mosaics of Roman villas.
