Paphos: from antiquity to the present day
Description:
At the beginning of our trip we will visit the village of Geroskipou, which in Greek means “old garden”. Once through this garden passed the path of pilgrims to the sanctuary of the great Aphrodite. Now there is a magnificent Christian church of St. Paraskeva.
This saint, who was called “the holy grandmother”, was venerated since the days of paganism. It was believed that she “weaves the thread of a woman’s fate.” During the trip you will learn all the pagan and Christian beliefs associated with Paraskaya Friday.
Today Geroskipu is famous for its mini-factories for the manufacture of lucum. We will visit one of them where you can taste traditional Cypriot sweets.
Paphos is a city-museum under the open sky, thoroughly saturated with romance. Its walls remember the soldiers of Alexander the Great.
Here we will walk through the ruins of the ancient Roman city. You will see the pillar of which the Apostle Paul himself, who visited Cyprus in 45 AD, was punished with whips. And then we go to the catacombs of the Christian Great Martyr Saint Solomonia.
After that, we will walk along the picturesque embankment of the city of Paphos, where you will see the ancient city fort.
While walking through the famous mosaics of Paphos (UNESCO), you will hear ancient Greek myths, the plots of which are depicted here.
And then we go to the underground city of the dead - the Royal Tombs.
