Paphos

Holy Coast. Departure from Paphos

Description:

We will head to the heart of Larnaca to the embankment, along which majestic palm trees grow, and next to which the main shrine is located - the Church of St. Lazarus. According to legend, Saint Lazarus after the resurrection by Jesus arrived in Cyprus and became the first bishop of Larnaca, living here for another 30 years. Then we will proceed to the small charming convent of St. Thekla. Thekla was a disciple of the Apostle Paul, who suffered in the first century and was venerated more than all the holy wives in the ancient Church. For a long time the monastery is famous for healing mud and waters that help with skin diseases. On the way there we will visit the temple of Panagia Angeloktistos in the village of Kiti. And in the future we will go to the convent of St. George Alamanos. It is located near the coast, between the village of Zigi and Limassol. In Cyprus, St. George the Victorious is especially honored.

The construction of the temple of St. Lazarus began in 890 on the site of the already existing church, where Lazarus, a friend of Jesus Christ, was buried. Funds for the construction were provided to the city of Kition (then the city of Larnaca) by the Byzantine emperor Leo VI the Wise, in exchange for part of the relics of St. Lazarus. The temple is made of stone, consists of three naves - the central and side rooms and three domes located on the middle nave. In the early history of the temple, when the area where it is located was uninhabited, there were swamps around (Svyato Lazarev swamps), this structure had the status of a monastery.

The monastery, built in honor of St. Thekla, a disciple of the Apostle Peter, whom he himself called his “first spiritual daughter”, is located between Limassol and Larnaca and is considered one of the largest shrines of the island. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come here every year. This place is especially popular among those who suffer from any diseases and have already lost all hope for healing. There is a lot of documented evidence of how people actually recovered after visiting the monastery. According to legend, once upon a time, the holy Queen Helena, stopping in Cyprus on the way from Jerusalem to Constantinople, discovered an amazing spring on this place, the water from which could cure almost any disease. In addition, clay from it is also considered healing - with its help, many managed to get rid of almost incurable skin diseases. Eventually, around 1471, a monastery was built there.

The Monastery of St. George Alamanu (Greek: Ιερ μον το Αγίου Γεωργίου Αλαμάνου) is one of the largest convents in Cyprus. It was founded in 1190 by settlers from Palestine. In 1187, the state of Jerusalem was captured by Saladin. Christians could not feel at ease there, so many monks had to leave the Holy Land. The founders of the monastery were refugees. The first on the site of the future monastery in a secluded cell settled a monk named George. He enjoyed great respect among the local population, after his death he was revered as a miracle worker. The monastery, built next to his cell, was named after St. George. George the Victorious...
