Monastery of the Holy Apostle Andreas

Paphos, Cyprus

Description:

The monastery of St. Apostle Andreas has long been a place of pilgrimage on the island. The first name of the temple was “Lourdes of Cyprus”, which means “sacred place in Cyprus”. It dates back to the fifteenth century and is the only surviving building from that period. It is located at the very end of the Carpasia Peninsula.

The present name is associated with the Apostle Andrew the First-Called. According to legend, the ship on which he sailed experienced a shortage of water. Andrew offered to land on the shore, promising water. When the sailors came ashore, they saw a large stone. When they saw him, they saw that he was in the water. The water was also healing. The captain of the ship washed it and got rid of eye disease. Later, in honor of his healer, he founded a church here. By the way, the source still exists, pipes were diverted from it, and water can be dialled in the area of the old chapel behind the monastery. Moreover, the point of the island where the temple is located is called the Cape of the Apostle Andrew. A temple was built in the Gothic style. It was restored in 2015-1016 and attracts millions of pilgrims.

The main decoration is a gilded iconostasis. This is the edge of the island, even a stone with the inscription "Finish" says it.

You can get here only by car, public transport does not go here.
