Established by the Decree of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic of October 26, 1993 No. 519, taking into account the decision of the Board of the State Archival Agency under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.
On August 30, 1926, the Regional Executive Committee of the Kyrgyz Autonomous Region (KAO) adopted a resolution “On the organization of the archive business of the KAO and the putting in order of archival material at institutions.” In accordance with this resolution, on September 1, 1926, an Archival Bureau was created under the Regional Executive Committee of the KAO, which is responsible for organizing archival affairs in Kyrgyzstan. This historic decision marked the beginning of the formation and further development of the archival business of Kyrgyzstan.
Currently, the system of institutions of the State Archival Agency under the Government of Kyrgyzstan includes 3 central, 8 regional state archives, state archives of Bishkek and Osh, 53 raygorgosarchiv. In the archives are permanently stored 17 thousand 142 funds with a volume of more than 3 million 500 thousand items of storage on a paper basis, 16 thousand 216 movies, 84 thousand 659 photos, 5910 fono and 178 items of storage of video documents. More than 500 people work in the archive industry of Kyrgyzstan.
