China Youth Day

Description:

China's Youth Day is celebrated as another revolutionary date
May 4 was originally proclaimed as Chinese Youth Day in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border area at the initiative of the region’s youth organizations. At that time, the Kuomintang, under the pressure of the patriotic movement of the broad masses of young people, also agreed with this decision.

Later, the Kuomintang, fearing the growth of revolutionary moods of the youth, considered this decision dangerous and postponed the Youth Day to March 29 (Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of the Revolution who died in 1911 and were buried in the suburbs of Canton – Juanhuagan). However, on the territory of the revolutionary strongholds led by the Communist Party of China, May 4 remained Youth Day.

After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the State Administrative Council of the Central People’s Government officially declared May 4 as Chinese Youth Day in December 1949.

China Youth Day is celebrated as another revolutionary date – the anniversary of the beginning of the patriotic movement “May 4”. This is an ordinary working day, notable mainly for the appearance of thematic articles in newspapers and organizations of the youth rally in support of the policies of the Chinese Communist Party in Tiananmen Square near the monument to the People's Heroes.
