Quitang Gorge
From Baidicheng to Datsizhen City
Description:
One of the three great gorges on the Yangtze River (Quitan, Wusia and Silin) and the first if you follow from west to east. Quitang runs from Baidicheng to the city of Daqizhen. Its length is 7 kilometers. This is much shorter than the length of Usia and Silin (about 40 kilometers). Quitang is the narrowest of all gorges, its maximum width is only 150 meters.
The Quitan Gorge is famous for the steepness of its rocks and grandeur, as well as the huge cliffs that form the gate to the river.
In the Quitan gorge, the so-called hanging coffins were found - burials that were placed on the rocks, high above the ground. This is an ancient burial custom of some Chinese nationalities (for example, Bo). People believed that mountains are a ladder between the earth and the heavens. In addition, the inhabitants wanted to protect the dead from desecration by enemies and animals.
