Dalian

Friendship Square

Sheng Li Guang Chang, Zhong Shan Qu, Dalian, Liaoning, China,

Description:

In the center of the picturesque square is a huge pearl, symbolizing friendship between peoples, which looks especially spectacular in the dark. Around there are office buildings, hotels, a monumental town hall, as well as the Bank of China building.

The square was built in the early twentieth century - back in the days of tsarist Russia. At that time, the authority in Dalian belonged to representatives of Japan and the new square was called "Western". After some time, the name was changed in honor of the partnership and successful relations between China and the USSR.

In 1996, a giant pearl ball appeared on the square, decorated with 7852 multi-colored light bulbs. The color of each light bulb has a certain meaning: red means well-being, yellow – a symbol of a rich harvest, green – a symbol of hope. At the base of the ball - five supporting hands: red, yellow, black, white and brown - this symbolic image reminds us of the friendship of people of different skin colors.
