Shinhai Square
Sha He Kou Qu, Dalian, Liaoning, China 78 m SE
Description:
Singhai Square was built in 1994. The square has the shape of a star, in the center of which two marble columns rise. They were erected in 1997 to commemorate Hong Kong’s return to the People’s Republic of China.
Xinghai Square is the largest in China. It contains 999 stones of red marble, as well as 9 stone statues depicting ancient ships. According to the Chinese builders, all this should personify the unity of heaven and earth.
The symbolism does not end there. The outer diameter of Singhai Square is 239.9 meters, while the inner diameter is 199.9 meters. This is the correlation of two measures of chronology - familiar to us and Chinese. The fact is that in 1990 (2399th according to the Chinese calendar) the city of Dalian turned 100 years old.
