Guilin

Elephant trunk mountain

Xiang Shan Qu, Guilin, Guangxi, China

Description:

South of the central street of Guilin Zhongshanlu is an ancient symbol of the city - Mount Xiangbishan (Elephant trunk).

The mountain looks like the trunk of an elephant, which is lowered into the water. It's 100 meters high. There is a legend that says that an elephant came down from heaven to help people in difficult work. This angered the Heavenly Emperor: he struck the elephant with a dagger and the elephant turned into a stone.

On the flat top of the mountain is a brick pagoda, resembling a sword. It was built in the XIV century.

Between the elephant’s trunk and its torso is a circular cave through which the Lijiang River flows. On a full moon, the round cave of the Elephant trunk in the river resembles another moon. People in Guilin say that on nights like this, the mountain has reflections of two beautiful moons.
