Harbin

Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

China, Harbin

Description:

The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Harbin is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Chinese province of Daoli. The cathedral was built in this city not by chance, because it was in it that the apostolic administration of Harbin was located.

The history of the founding of the cathedral in Harbin goes back to 1900, when Polish builders came to the country to create the Chinese Eastern Railway. Six years later it was decided to build a Catholic church for the workers. In 1907, the temple was built and consecrated by Bishop Jan Celjak of Poland.

In the middle of the XX century, after the Cultural Revolution of 1966, the church stopped worship, and the building itself was transferred to the school. Over time, the local administration used the building for a variety of needs, which caused the destruction of walls and interior decoration.

In 1980, the Catholic Diocese of Jilin achieved the transfer of the building into its jurisdiction, after which the active restoration of the church began. In 2004, the reconstruction of the temple was completed, and it was re-consecrated.
