Hagia Sophia Cathedral

China, Harbin

Description:

St. Sophia Cathedral is an inactive temple of the Harbin and Manchurian diocese of the Chinese Orthodox Church. Since November 1996, the cathedral has been on the list of cultural monuments of the People’s Republic of China.

With an area of almost 721 square meters and a height of about 54 meters, Hagia Sophia is an example of typical Byzantine architecture, most rarely found in China. Carefully designed and decorated, the elegant church was included in the list of cultural monuments under state protection in 1996 and six months later was renovated. After renovation, a small art gallery has opened in the church building, displaying about 1,000 photographs depicting the history, modern life and future of the famous cultural city of Harbin.
