Guia Fortress
Guia Hill, Rampa do Reservatorio, Macau, China
Description:
Guya Fortress is a historical military fortress located at the monastery of St. Lazarus in the Chinese city of Macau. It, like many other fortifications of the city, built in the early seventeenth century, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fort was built around the monastery in 1622 to defend against Dutch invaders. The defense complex is located at the highest point of Macau, so it was here that it was decided to build a signal beacon. It was the first European-style lighthouse built on the coast of China.
It is better to start acquaintance with the fortress by climbing to the top of the lighthouse along a spiral staircase. Here, at an altitude of 91 meters, is the observation deck and the lantern itself, whose fire is visible for 20 miles around. Inside the fortress there is a chapel, which miraculously preserved ancient frescoes. They depict Western and Chinese religious and mythological motifs.
