Monkey Island Reserve (an area of about 1000 hectares) was founded in 1965 and is the largest reserve in China for breeding monkeys. It is located on a small peninsula 90 km from Sanya, near the village of Xincun, from which it is separated by a small strait. From the village to the reserve can be reached by funicular. This is the longest cable car over water in China, with a length of 2,138 meters. From the cabin of the funicular from a bird’s eye view you can see the strait, the open sea, a unique settlement of the “sea people”.
Excursion to the “Island of Monkeys” involves taking precautions. You can not touch and pet monkeys, you can not try to feed them, tease or scare them. This can lead to aggression from animals. It is not recommended to open bags in their presence, take out bottles and other small items, because monkeys will attack and take away items of interest to them. In general, prudence and caution should be observed. The monkeys themselves are carried in large numbers around the reserve. It is quite interesting to walk along the paths among the monkeys who freely run and jump at arm’s length.
