Folklore Village of Li and Mao

The huge park is located in the picturesque area of Ganshilin, 28 km. from the city of Sanya.

On the territory of the park there are 2 villages of the peoples of Hainan Island - Li and Miao.

The indigenous population of Hainan Island is the Li people, living mainly in dense tropical forests on the slopes of the mountains in the center of the island. According to one version, in ancient times, their ancestors migrated to the island of Hainan from the mainland, on the other – they sailed from the islands of Southeast Asia and have lived here since time immemorial, long before the arrival of the Chinese.

Representatives of another people living in Hainan are direct descendants of the Miao tribe from Guangxi province. They began to move to the island during the Ming dynasty (XIV-XVII centuries). Miao tribes inhabited mountainous, hard-to-reach areas and led a nomadic lifestyle, engaged in hunting, fishing, are famous as fearless wars, have a rich original culture. In addition, they were also famous for their witchcraft and ability to prepare poisons. The Miao still retain their traditions. At the head of the village, the elder and, it is said, all the girls of these tribes are still taught witchcraft, and the boys are trained in hunting in the mountains.
