Lake Yueyaquan

Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Gansu, China

Description:

This small and amazing lake, located in the desert near the city of Dunhuang, in Gansu province, has the shape of a crescent. It is also called the Crescent Source.

The water in the lake is unusually clean, although it is located in the heart of a lifeless desert. It is far from optimistic that this natural wonder is gradually evaporated. Measurements of Yueyaquan in the last century showed that its average depth is up to 5 meters, and more recently measurements showed 1 meter of average depth. During this period, the lake became shallow, and its area was reduced to 5500 square meters.

Around the oasis grows several dozen trees, and also built buildings for visitors. Locals use the water from the lake as it is the only source nearby.

Local authorities planned to save the lake, but due to lack of finances, these intentions are far from reality.
