Lake Mansarovar

Kailash, Darchen, Tibet Autonomous Region, China

Description:

Lake Mansarovar is often called a lake of living water. Here, on the world’s highest freshwater lake, swans live. The lake stretches for many miles and most of the year it is enclosed in ice. But when the ice melts, the birds come back. The area around the lake is considered rich in minerals, hot springs beat from the ground, and hundreds of wild animals live in the vicinity.

About an hour drive from Mansarovar at an altitude of 4760 meters is the village of Darchen - the starting point before climbing the greatest Tibetan shrine - Mount Kailash. Such a close location of the village to the top was the reason for the rapid growth of its popularity. This is the last stronghold of civilization before travelers go on a three-day bark, so called the ritual bypass of Kailas. In the village there is a small monastery, guest houses, small restaurants with traditional cuisine. To understand the greatness of Tibet, you should start from here.
