Guru Rinpoche Cave

Chiu Gompa Monastery, 33 km from Mount Kailash

Description:

Cave at Chiu Gompa Monastery. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Buddhism in Tibet, who once came from Nepal, spent the last seven days of his life here. Followers revere Guru Rinpoche as the second most important figure after Buddha.

The cave is small in size, at the same time it can accommodate no more than five people. Opposite the entrance to the cave is a makeshift altar, in which stands a bronze figure of Guru. On his sides are the figures of his wives, Nepali and Tibetan.

It is believed that Guru Rinpoche taught the Tibetans the mystery of meditation and the art of enlightenment. Therefore, many pilgrims believe that if you spend the night in this cave, you can reach an enlightened state. But this is not easy – you need to get permission from the monks of the monastery of Chiu Gompa.
