The city of Armenia is located in Colombia and is the capital of the Department of Kindio, it is home to 324,588 people (2004).
The city was founded in 1889, originally called Villa Holguin in honor of the president, Carlos Holguin Magliarino, but the current name of the city received thanks to the estate, whose owners were immigrants from Armenia. After the Armenian Genocide in 1894-1896, this name was fixed in memory of the murdered compatriots, a monument was also erected in honor of the dead, and Armenian emigrants began to come to the city.
Armenia has another name - the City of Wonders, which it acquired due to the flourishing and rapid growth of agriculture. Armenia is considered one of the most developed Colombian cities with a high standard of living.
The third name of the city is the Coffee Capital. Comfortable weather conditions remain in the Kindio area all year round, and the average annual temperature is kept at + 21 C. The mild and warm climate allows you to grow elite varieties of coffee, which is valued all over the world for its delicate taste and pleasant aroma.
Local traditions and culture are associated with coffee, for example, the National Coffee Festival is held every year in Armenia, where a coffee queen is chosen. The city has a coffee museum, and interesting excursions are held on coffee plantations in the National Coffee Park.
Near Armenia there is a picturesque National Nature Reserve "Los Nevados", as well as the Kokor Valley or Palm Valley, in which the world's tallest wax palms grow.
