Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero, Limon, Costa Rica

Description:

Tortuguero is a national park located in the northeastern part of Costa Rica, in the basin of the river of the same name on the Caribbean coast. It covers a significant area of about 31,200 hectares, it is covered with rain forest and practically untouched by man. There is a humid tropical climate, the park is the rainiest region in Costa Rica. Heavy sudden downpours are common, with about 6,000 mm of precipitation a year. Tortuguero beaches are key nesting sites for endangered sea turtles such as loggerhead, bissa, leatherback and green. You can get to the park only by river transport or balloon.

Tortuguero includes a huge variety of tropical fauna and flora. Here in natural conditions live three-toed sloths, jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, as well as three species of monkeys - macaques, white-headed capuchins and arachnid howlers. The park saves them from extinction, as their natural habitat has been greatly reduced. Caimans, manatees and crocodiles live in the local waters, and many birds, about 375 species, live in the crowns of trees. Of these, toucans, kingfishers, herons, uruba and parrots deserve special attention.
