Labor Day

Description:

This is how Cubans celebrate Labor Day.
On May 1, 1886, a large strike of workers took place in the United States, the demonstration of which was brutally suppressed. In July 1889, the Paris Congress of the Second International decided to hold annual demonstrations on May 1 in memory of the Chicago workers’ speech.

For a long time, May Day was a symbol of revolution, of irreconcilable class struggle. "May Day" In the USSR for many years was the main public holiday.

This day is always a very big holiday in Cuba, one of the few countries in the socialist camp. Today, there are popular demonstrations all over the island in which poor but contented and proud Cubans greet each other on the main streets of all cities, wave national flags, stage simple but rather interesting performances.

The processions take place from morning until about noon. Then the bulk of people go home and continue the holiday with family and friends. On the first of May, it is customary to congratulate neighbors, friends and relatives, indicating their attention with a small symbolic gift.
