International Women's Day

Description:

On this day, Cuban society celebrates the beautiful half of the island.
On January 1, 1959, Comandante Fidel Castro told the nation in a speech in Santiago that not only men but also women fought in Cuba, and that Marianne Grajales' great feat was eloquent proof that they were as excellent fighters as the best male soldiers. It was one of the most magnificent lessons of Cuban history and perhaps the most important for the national image of women.

Since that time, the system of stereotypes broke that a woman was born to wash, iron, cook and give birth to children. Cuba celebrates International Women’s Day on a par with other countries.

On this day, Cuban society honors the beautiful half of the island, as their contribution to the military, scientific, intellectual and leadership activities is truly enormous. Consequently, their fate ceased to be regarded as the eternal role of wife, mother and mistress of the house. It has been an intense process in which tens of thousands of women have been actively involved, driven by the desire and decision to join the political, social and economic life of the country. Cubans believe that women's participation is the most beautiful link in the Cuban revolutionary process.

Participating in the life of their native country, they gain increasing respect and admiration of friends, relatives, spouse, because shoulder to shoulder they share with them the historical mission of orientation and creating a family.
