Information about some interesting fish species that live in the coastal waters of Cuba.
White spear-bearer (white marlin, Tetrapturus Albidus)
It can reach 3 m in length (usually there are individuals about 2 m) and weigh more than 50 kg. Fishers prefer to use small tunas as bait.
The most convenient time for catching white marlin is from 10:00 to 15:00. Best time of year and places: from April to May – the south-western part of the country, at the end of the season – the north-west. At this time, the white marlin is moving west.
The Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans)
It can reach 4 m in length and weigh up to 500 kg. Blue marlin usually feeds throughout the day, close to the surface of the water. Best caught between 05:00 and 11:00. It is well caught on artificial bait, but experienced anglers prefer to use sardines or other fish.
The best season and fishing places: from July to September - northwest, from March to June - on the southeast coast, from April to June - in the southwest.
The Cosmopolitan Sailboat (Istioph Platypterus)
Frequently fishermen pull out 3 meter representatives of this species, but usually they reach a length of 1.5 meters with an average weight of about 20 kg. Often there are sailboats weighing up to 40 kg.
It's better to catch natural bait. Sardines or other small fish are used as such.
The best fishing time is from 09:00 to 14:00. Best seasons and places: from October to November - the north-western part of the island, from March to June - the south-east, from April to June - the south-west.
Swordfish (Xiphias Gladius)
This species reaches 4.5 m and can weigh more than 500 kg, although fish are usually about 2.5 m long and weigh about 150 kg.
Usually fishermen use natural bait (such as squid), but in some places luminescent artificial bait is also a success.
Like other species, swordfish migrate and the best time of year for fishing is the period from February to March in the northwest, when the fish moves along the Florida Strait to the north.
Weather conditions are important for catching these fish. The best time of year with sustained sunny weather is spring and summer, and marlin is well caught in the northeast.
Other types of fish caught on flasks.
