Havana Central Park
Havana central park, Agramonte, Havana
Description:
Havana Central Park is the main park of the city, which is located in the western part of Havana.
The history of the park begins with the history of Elizabeth II Square, which gradually expanded in the late XIX century, when the city walls were demolished. At the beginning of the next century, hotels, commercial buildings and houses of Spanish societies were built around the site. On February 24, 1905, a monument to the famous Cuban hero José Marti was erected in the park. The statue was created by sculptor José Vilatta Saavedr.
In 1960, architect Eugenio Batista was commissioned to remodel the park. He focused on improving the landscape. Twenty-eight palm trees have appeared around the monument to Jose Marti, which symbolize the date of his birth. The two fountains were replaced by a group of densely leafed plants.
Nowadays, the park is very popular among locals who come here to meet friends and to numerous sports events. In turn, this attracts tourists who want to plunge into the atmosphere of local life, feel the Cuban flavor.
