Leon Reserve
Description:
The Leon Reserve is located near the city of Matantas, Cuba, in the valley of the Yumuri River. The reserve is represented by endemic melocactus Leon, in whose honor it is named.
The endemic cactus species, which was first studied in 1934, is a perennial plant about 7-9 centimeters high, which during flowering has spherical structures covered with reddish-brown bristles. Melocactus matansanus is named after the town of Matantas and is an ornamental plant.
