Archaeological Reserve
Description:
The archaeological reserve is a unique reserve of the state of Kuwait, which was opened recently, in the XXI century, on the island of Failaka - the most popular tourist place in the country. The island is located in the northwestern part of the Persian Gulf, and is a small triangular island with an area of about 24 square kilometers.
The island was inhabited in the Stone Age, and during the Bronze Age on this island were outposts of the famous civilization Dilmun. The ruins of ancient dwellings, carved on stones images of stars and planets indicate that even then there was a sufficiently developed culture on Failak. Parts of this ancient civilization are the objects of excavation in the archaeological reserve. Coins and seals found on the island indicate its importance as one of the largest trading bases midway between Mesopotamia, Persia, the Levant and India, as well as the countries of the Mediterranean and Africa. The pride of the island is also the ancient temples of Ikaros and Azuk.
After the war with Iraq, the island was occupied by an American base and tours were stopped. However, due to the new discoveries of the ruins of Portuguese and British forts on the territory of Failaki and the opening of the archaeological reserve, the island again took its usual place among the sights of Kuwait, and receives many tourists every week.
