Failak Island

Failaka Island, Persian Gulf

Description:

Failaka Island is the most popular tourist destination in Kuwait, located in the northwestern part of the Persian Gulf and is a small triangular island with an area of about 24 square kilometers (14 kilometers in length and 8 in width). This island was inhabited in the Stone Age, and during the Bronze Age on this island were outposts of the famous civilization Dilmun. An archaeological reserve has been established on the island.

The pride of Failaka Island is the ancient temples of Ikaros and Azuk, as well as numerous excavation sites. Coins and seals found on the island indicate its importance as one of the largest trading bases on the route between Mesopotamia, Persia, the Levant and India, as well as the countries of the Mediterranean and Africa. After the war with Iraq, the island was occupied by an American base and tours were stopped. However, due to new discoveries of ruins of Portuguese and British forts on the territory of Failaki, the island again took its usual place among the sights of Kuwait.

Before Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, 2,000 people lived on the island. The village of Ez-Zour was located in the northwestern part of the island. In 1990-1991, the population of the island was expelled to the mainland by the Iraqi authorities, the island was used by the Iraqi military as a testing ground. However, the island has become a popular holiday destination for Kuwaiti residents who cross to it by ferry.
